Former Mayor Arrested for Alleged Sexual Abuse of Foreign Exchange Student
Robert "Brian" Bassett, a 58-year-old former mayor of Biggs, California, was arrested on July 9 on suspicion of sexually abusing a minor foreign exchange student placed in his care, according to Gridley police. He has been booked into the Butte County Jail on multiple felony charges, including sexual penetration of a minor, oral copulation with a minor, and statutory rape.
The investigation began after police received allegations that the student had been repeatedly abused while living with a host family. Police confirmed that the victim is safe and receiving support from family and friends.
Gridley police described the situation as a significant betrayal of trust, emphasizing the responsibility held by individuals caring for minors from abroad. Due to the involvement of a minor, further details about the case are being withheld to protect the ongoing criminal proceedings.
Bassett served as mayor in 2023 and was a city council member until his resignation in 2025. Gridley is located in Butte County, approximately an hour north of Sacramento.
