Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a 52-year-old Mexican immigrant, was shot and killed by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent during a traffic stop in Houston's East End on July 7. According to ICE, agents attempted to conduct a traffic stop as part of a targeted operation, but Salgado Araujo allegedly evaded arrest and rammed his vehicle into a law enforcement car.

Witnesses reported that Salgado Araujo was shot while inside his van and later died at a hospital from his injuries. His family stated that he was on his way to work at the time of the incident. Three other men in the vehicle, including Salgado Araujo's brother, were detained by ICE agents.

ICE officials claimed that Salgado Araujo did not comply with verbal commands before the shooting occurred. His family contended that he was unaware that the unmarked vehicles were law enforcement and feared for his safety. Salgado Araujo had no criminal history, and his son mentioned that he was in the process of applying for a work permit.

The Department of Homeland Security's Office of the Inspector General is leading an investigation into the shooting, while the FBI is also looking into the incident. Local officials, including Houston Mayor John Whitmire and Harris County District Attorney Sean Teare, have called for a transparent investigation. Activists and lawmakers are demanding the release of all evidence related to the case.
