Couple Detained After Climbing Empire State Building with Proposal Banner
Two individuals were taken into custody after scaling the Empire State Building in New York City on July 1, 2026. The pair, who wore masks, reached the top of the building's antenna and unfurled a banner that read, βWhen the power of love beats the love of power the world knows peace.β The New York Police Department reported that the climbers were apprehended without incident, and charges are pending as the investigation continues.
Former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe commented on the incident, stating that it placed city officials and the building's owners in a difficult position. He emphasized the need for prosecution to deter similar acts in the future, warning that such reckless behavior could lead to tragedy.
It remains unclear how the couple managed to reach the top of the 1,454-foot landmark, which serves as a transmission site for local TV and radio stations. Video footage believed to show the climbers has surfaced on social media. The police have not released further details regarding the ongoing investigation.
