Cooling Centers Open as Extreme Heat Hits New York and New Jersey
As extreme heat is forecasted for the New York and New Jersey area, officials are activating cooling centers and extending hours at parks and pools to provide relief. Starting Wednesday, hundreds of cooling centers will open across New York City, including schools, libraries, hospitals, and senior centers. The Javits Center will also serve as a cooling center through the Fourth of July weekend.
New York City is deploying 15 mobile cooling vans staffed with nurses and paramedics to distribute water, electrolytes, and sunscreen, as well as conduct wellness checks for vulnerable populations. Residents are encouraged to complete errands before the heat peaks, with officials advising to stock up on groceries and medications.
In addition to cooling centers, outdoor workers will have access to pop-up stations with water and misting fans. Subway station fans will be activated to improve airflow, and transit officials will inspect air conditioning systems on railcars and buses to ensure they are functioning properly.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced extended hours for several state parks and beaches from July 1 to July 3, with specific hours listed for various locations. Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont also activated the state's Extreme Hot Weather Protocol, which will remain in effect from noon Tuesday through at least 6 p.m. Sunday.
