David Vander Meer Dies Before Court Appearance for Wife's Murder

David Vander Meer, a former youth pastor charged with murder and insurance fraud in connection with the 2006 death of his wife, was pronounced dead on Thursday, the same day he was scheduled to appear in court. The announcement was made by a Las Vegas judge during a hearing.

The 49-year-old Vander Meer was accused of killing his then-29-year-old wife, Bernadette Vander Meer, and collecting over $567,000 from her life insurance policy. Police reported that he had been in custody at the Clark County Detention Center since June 22, 2023, and was a fugitive from another state.

On the day of his court appearance, authorities stated that a male inmate at the detention center suffered self-inflicted injuries and was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The Clark County Coroner's Office is expected to release the official cause of death, which is currently pending.

David Vander Meer's wife died during a hiking trip in Zion National Park in 2006, which was initially ruled an accident. However, the circumstances surrounding her death have been questioned, especially following a tip received by law enforcement in 2022 regarding Vander Meer's alleged inappropriate relationships with minors.

As of now, the investigation into Bernadette Vander Meer's death remains unresolved, and the case has garnered renewed scrutiny following the recent developments.
