Parents Charged with Murder Following Death of Overweight Son in Michigan
Damien O’Brien and Jessica O’Brien have been charged with second-degree murder and multiple counts of child abuse after the death of their 7-year-old son, Casper O’Brien, who weighed 255 pounds at the time of his passing. The charges were filed by the Genesee County Prosecutor’s Office following an autopsy that determined extreme morbid obesity was the cause of death.
Authorities were alerted to the situation in November 2025, leading to the couple's arrest. Court documents indicate that the O’Briens failed to provide adequate care for Casper, who had become immobile due to neglect. Prosecutors allege that the parents did not ensure proper nutrition, exercise, or a safe living environment, nor did they seek necessary medical treatment despite having health coverage.
In addition to the charges related to Casper, the couple faces a second count of child abuse concerning their 5-year-old daughter, who was reportedly found in poor condition when law enforcement arrived. The couple was arraigned on the charges last week, and a probable cause hearing is scheduled for next Thursday in the 67th District Court.
Prosecutor David Leyton described the case as involving “wanton and willful neglect” by the parents, which led to severe health issues for their son, including bed sores and rashes. It remains unclear if the O’Briens have legal representation.
