Three Killed Protecting School Children in San Diego Mosque Attack
On Monday, three community members were killed at the Islamic Center of San Diego while successfully blocking two teenage gunmen from reaching an on-site school housing 140 children. The attackers, identified by authorities as 18-year-old Caleb Vasquez and 17-year-old Cain Clark, died from self-inflicted gunshot wounds. The victims—security guard Amin Abdullah, Mansour Kaziha, and Nadir Awad—have been praised by the Islamic Center for sacrificing their lives to protect others.
According to authorities, the shooting began around 11:43 a.m. in the Clairemont-neighborhood mosque complex. Abdullah engaged the armor-clad gunmen in a parking lot shootout, hitting one of the attackers and triggering an emergency radio transmission. This transmission allowed the adjacent Bright Horizon Academy to execute a lockdown, securing the children safely behind locked doors just 15 feet away from the gunmen. Earlier that morning, at 9:40 a.m., Clark's mother had called 911 to report her son missing, suicidal, wearing camouflage, and in possession of stolen firearms, which triggered a localized threat alert.
Federal and local investigators subsequently recovered a 75-page manifesto and digital evidence detailing radical, white supremacist ideologies. FBI Special Agent in Charge Mark Remily stated that the document heavily references 'accelerationism' and glorifies past mass killers, including the 2019 Christchurch, New Zealand mosque shootings. The suspects also filmed a 10-minute video of the assault and uploaded it to online forums. Investigators found that the two teenagers initially met on Discord before realizing they lived in the same city.
Law enforcement officers recovered a cache of 30 firearms, tactical gear, and a crossbow during the investigation. Authorities revealed that the weapons belonged to a parent of the 17-year-old shooter and were not registered to either teenager. The FBI noted that while the target was a mosque, the manifesto contained broad anti-Islamic, antisemitic, racist, and misogynistic rhetoric.
