12-Year-Old Hospitalized with Life-Threatening Injuries After E-Bike Collision in San Diego

A 12-year-old boy sustained life-threatening injuries Saturday evening after his e-bike collided with a Tesla in the Carmel Valley area. The San Diego Police Department (SDPD) reported the crash occurred at approximately 5:40 p.m. on Del Mar Heights Road.

According to investigators, the child was riding westbound in the bike lane of Del Mar Heights Road. At the same time, a 64-year-old man was driving a 2023 Tesla Model Y in the same direction in the number one lane. Police said the collision occurred when the 12-year-old attempted to make a left-hand turn from the bike lane toward southbound Old Carmel Valley Road.

The boy was struck by the front passenger side of the vehicle. He suffered a fractured clavicle and multiple brain bleeds that required emergency surgery. Medical officials have classified his injuries as life-threatening as of the latest update from authorities.

The San Diego Police Department is leading the investigation into the incident. Officers stated that alcohol was not a factor in the collision. No further details regarding the condition of the driver or potential charges have been released.
