Five Women Injured in Shooting Near Indiana University After Little 500 Event
Five women were injured early Sunday in a shooting near Indiana University in Bloomington, police said. The incident occurred around 12:25 a.m. near the Five Guys restaurant on Kirkwood Avenue, just blocks from the university, following the annual Little 500 bicycle races.
Bloomington Police Chief Mike Diekhoff said officers monitoring post-race crowds heard gunshots and responded to the scene, where they found five women, ages 17 to 22, with injuries from gunshots or bullet fragments. Four of the victims were treated and released, while one remained hospitalized in stable condition as of Sunday, according to Diekhoff.
Police believe a fight broke out between two females near the restaurant before multiple people drew handguns. Investigators think two individuals fired shots. Diekhoff said the shooting does not appear to have been random, and the investigation is ongoing.
Indiana University stated that no students are believed to be involved in the incident. City officials and university leaders addressed concerns about gun violence and public safety during the Little 500 weekend, noting that current Indiana laws allow open carry and do not permit local restrictions on firearms at public gatherings.
