Wildfires in South Georgia Destroy Over 100 Homes and Burn More Than 40,000 Acres

Two large wildfires in southern Georgia have destroyed more than 100 homes and burned over 40,000 acres, according to state officials. The Brantley County fire has grown to more than 9,500 acres, while the Pineland Road fire in Clinch County has expanded to over 31,000 acres as of Friday, authorities said.

Governor Brian Kemp toured the affected areas on Friday and met with first responders. At a press conference, Kemp stated that federal authorities have identified the Brantley Highway 82 fire and the Pineland Road fire as the two most dangerous and significant wildfires currently burning in the United States. Kemp said officials believe the Brantley Highway 82 fire began when a party balloon landed on a power line and caused a spark.

Extreme drought conditions have contributed to the rapid spread of the fires, with new blazes reported overnight in rural parts of south Georgia. Fire activity was expected to remain extremely high through the weekend, officials said.

Residents have reported significant losses, including homes and businesses. One local business owner, Jesse Morgan, said his automotive shop, which he started in 1996, was destroyed and that his insurance claim was denied. Another resident, Anna Dudek, described fleeing with her family and pets as flames approached her home.

Efforts to contain the fires are ongoing, and authorities continue to monitor the situation closely.
