Shooting at Teotihuacan Pyramids Leaves Canadian Tourist Dead, Multiple Injured

On Monday morning, a gunman opened fire on tourists at the historic Teotihuacan pyramids north of Mexico City, resulting in the death of a Canadian visitor and injuries to at least 13 others, according to authorities. The attack occurred around 11:30 a.m., as tourists crowded the popular archaeological site, which is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Mexico’s most visited destinations.

State officials identified the suspected shooter as 27-year-old Julio Cesar Jasso, a Mexican national. Authorities reported that Jasso died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound following the attack. Security personnel recovered a firearm, a knife, and ammunition at the scene and confirmed that no other assailants were involved.

At least seven people sustained gunshot wounds, while others were hurt amid the chaos as visitors scrambled to escape, some tumbling down the ancient stone steps. The injured ranged in age from six to 61 and included six Americans, three Colombians, one Russian, two Brazilians, and one Canadian. Many of the wounded were hospitalized for treatment.

Witnesses described panic as gunshots rang out atop the Pyramid of the Moon, forcing some tourists to lay flat while others rushed down the steps. Brenda Lee, a tourist from Vancouver, Canada, recalled how confusion gave way to fear as the sound of gunfire triggered a stampede for safety among the thousands present.

Local guides noted that while security checks were once routine at the site, these protocols had not been maintained in recent times. In response to the attack, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed condolences and pledged a thorough investigation, while Canadian and U.S. officials also offered statements of sympathy and support.

The Teotihuacan archaeological site has been closed indefinitely as authorities continue their investigation into the shooting. No further suspects are being sought at this time.
