Wildfire Prompts Evacuations in Lake Elsinore as Firefighters Battle Vista Fire
A wildfire broke out Friday afternoon near El Toro Road in the vicinity of Lake Elsinore, Riverside County, leading authorities to order evacuations for residents north of Highway 74, south of Ethanac Road, and east of El Toro Road.
The blaze, named the Vista fire, was first reported at 4:20 p.m., according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire). By early evening, the fire had spread across 183 acres, with no containment reported as of 6:35 p.m. Approximately 300 firefighting personnel have been deployed to the scene, using ground and aerial resources in an effort to control the flames.
Cal Fire stated that one firefighter sustained a minor injury during operations and was transported to a local hospital. Evacuation warnings have also been issued for nearby areas, expanding the call for readiness among local residents. An evacuation center has been opened at Ortega High School at 520 Chaney St. in Lake Elsinore. Animal sheltering is being provided at the San Jacinto Valley Animal Campus in San Jacinto, accommodating both large and small animals.
Residents described the response as prompt but familiar, noting that wildfires are recurrent threats to the area. In some neighborhoods, individuals were observed using garden hoses to protect their homes as a precautionary measure.
Firefighting units operating in the area include three helicopters, 28 fire engines, nine hand crews, two water tankers, and two bulldozers, according to Cal Fire. The National Weather Service reported wind speeds between 5 and 10 miles per hour, with gusts expected to reach up to 20 mph Friday evening, conditions that could challenge containment efforts.
Separately, Riverside County fire crews responded to a second blaze, the Palomar fire, near Palomar Street in Wildomar. This smaller wildfire was reported after 1 p.m. and had reached 90% containment by 6 p.m.
The Vista fire remains uncontained, with mandatory evacuations active and firefighting efforts ongoing as officials monitor weather conditions and fire behavior.
