White Sox Offense Erupts for 15 Hits in Victory Over Athletics
The Chicago White Sox captured a resounding 9-2 win against the Oakland Athletics on Friday night in West Sacramento, marking a standout performance for a lineup that has struggled in recent weeks.
Pitcher Davis Martin delivered his strongest outing of the season, allowing just three hits, two walks, and striking out four over seven innings. Martin retired the first 10 batters he faced before a misplayed fly ball—lost in the lights by center fielder Luisangel Acuna—resulted in a ground-rule double for Oakland’s Shea Langeliers, ending Martin’s early run at perfection.
After the defensive slip, Acuna quickly made up for it by hitting an RBI double in the bottom of the fourth, helping spark the White Sox’s bats. The team, which had been near the bottom of league hitting statistics, set a season-high with 15 hits. Munetaka Murakami starred with a three-run grand slam, powering a 3-for-5 night at the plate, including his sixth home run of the year. Colson Montgomery contributed two hits, a double, and drove in two runs, while Andrew Benintendi added three hits and two doubles.
Manager Will Venable praised the club for persevering despite difficult offensive stretches, highlighting the players’ strong at-bats and recent lack of results. Murakami’s home run traveled 431 feet at 114 mph and provided a turning point in the game.
Off the field, the White Sox made roster adjustments ahead of the game, calling up left-hander Doug Nikhazy from Triple-A Charlotte and optioning reliever Tyler Gilbert to the minors. Nikhazy, recently claimed off waivers, was brought in to counter Oakland’s lefty-heavy lineup.
Following Friday’s victory, the White Sox remain at the bottom of the major league standings at 6-13. The club continues to make changes to its pitching staff and batting order in the hopes of turning around its season. The series in California continues this weekend, with ongoing attention on roster moves and strategy decisions as the team looks to build momentum.
