Kristin Ramsey Released on Bond in 2011 Iowa Real Estate Agent Murder Case

Kristin Ramsey, the Iowa woman charged with first-degree murder in the 2011 fatal shooting of real estate agent Ashley Okland, has been released from custody after posting bond, according to court records.

Ramsey, 53, posted $50,000 bail—10% of her reduced $500,000 bond—on Thursday after a Dallas County judge lowered the bond from $2 million. Judge Coleman McAllister cited 52 letters of support from community members describing Ramsey as having deep Iowa ties and not being a danger to the public. The letters, along with in-person testimony from three witnesses including her mother, supported arguments that she was neither a flight risk nor a threat, the order states.

Prosecutors objected to the reduced bond but presented no new evidence at the most recent hearing. In his decision, the judge also weighed concerns about the violent nature of the crime alongside Ramsey's longstanding presence in the community, calling her flight risk "relatively moderate." The reduction comes with conditions: Ramsey is subject to house arrest, must wear a GPS monitoring device, and all firearms must be removed from her residence.

Ramsey is accused of shooting Okland, 27, twice at close range on April 8, 2011, inside a model home in West Des Moines. Authorities allege that a witness saw Ramsey outside the home shortly after hearing gunshots, reportedly pacing near her car before leaving the scene, and later found Okland unresponsive. The case sent shockwaves through the regional real estate community and prompted new safety precautions for agents.

Investigators have not identified a motive. Ramsey, who was working as a sales manager for the development company at the time, has consistently denied involvement and pleaded not guilty.

Court filings indicate Ramsey was identified as a person of interest early in the investigation, had several interviews with law enforcement, and gave varying accounts of her whereabouts during the day of the shooting. Despite ongoing scrutiny, the judge noted, Ramsey did not leave the area over the past 13 years.

Neither Ramsey's defense team nor prosecutors responded to requests for comment on Friday. Ramsey's next court hearing is scheduled for June 19. The investigation remains active as the case moves forward.
