Fugitive Wanted in 2020 Missouri Murder Captured in Florida After FBI List Placement
Authorities arrested KaShawn Nicola Roper in High Springs, Florida, on Wednesday, just one day after she was named to the FBI's Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list. Roper is accused of killing one woman and injuring another in Kansas City, Missouri, nearly six years ago.
The FBI said a public tip following Tuesday's announcement of Roper’s addition to the list, along with a reward offer of up to $1 million, led to her capture. Law enforcement took her into custody in High Springs, roughly 20 miles northwest of Gainesville and far from where the shooting occurred.
According to Kansas City police, the charges against Roper stem from a shooting early on August 23, 2020, when two women arrived at a local hospital with gunshot wounds after an altercation. Twenty-three-year-old Jazmyn Henrion was pronounced dead, while the other woman survived with non-life-threatening injuries. Investigators allege that Roper fired into a vehicle during the dispute, then quickly fled the area.
On September 10, 2020, Roper was formally charged with second-degree murder, armed criminal action, and unlawful use of a weapon in Missouri. The following year, a federal warrant was issued for unlawful flight to avoid prosecution. Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves noted officers never stopped searching for her throughout the investigation.
As of Thursday, online jail records in Alachua County, Florida, indicated Roper is being held without bond. No court appearance date has been set, and it remains unclear when extradition proceedings may commence. The investigation continues, and authorities have not released further details about her apprehension or transportation back to Missouri.
