Teen Killed, Another Injured in Shooting at Woodlawn Bus Stop

A 16-year-old boy was killed and a 16-year-old girl injured when shots were fired at a bus stop in the Woodlawn neighborhood of Chicago on Wednesday afternoon, according to police statements.

The shooting took place around 3:23 p.m. in the 6300 block of South Stony Island Avenue. Police reported that the two teenagers were waiting at the bus stop when an unidentified individual approached and opened fire.

Both victims were transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center. The boy, who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds, was initially listed in critical condition and later pronounced dead. The girl suffered a gunshot wound to her left leg and was reported to be in fair condition.

No suspects have been taken into custody as of Wednesday evening, and authorities are actively investigating the shooting.

The incident comes amid ongoing concerns about violence involving young people in the city. During a hearing on Tuesday, Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling referenced a rise in violent incidents among youth locally and nationwide, while noting recent declines in youth homicides in Chicago. Department data indicate that in 2024, the city has seen a downward trend in youth homicides compared to a peak in recent years.

Police have not released further information about the shooter or potential motives. The investigation remains ongoing, with no arrests reported at this time.
