Sheriff's Deputy Shot and Killed During Eviction in Porterville, California

A Tulare County sheriff’s deputy was shot and killed Thursday morning in Porterville, California while authorities attempted to serve an eviction notice, according to statements from local officials.

The shooting occurred as deputies arrived at a residence to deliver a final eviction order. Sheriff Mike Boudreaux confirmed that a 60-year-old man, identified as the tenant, opened fire on law enforcement, fatally striking one deputy. The deputy—whose name has not yet been released—was transported to a hospital but later died from his injuries.

Authorities said the man had not paid rent for more than a month and was reportedly expecting law enforcement. Sheriff Boudreaux described the incident as a planned ambush, stating the shooter "laid in wait" for responding officers before opening fire as they approached.

As of Thursday afternoon, the suspect remained barricaded inside the home and was believed to be armed with a rifle. SWAT teams were on the scene, clearing nearby homes and securing the area. Residents in the neighborhood were advised to shelter in place, while schools in the vicinity initiated lockdown procedures as a precaution.

Porterville, situated about 150 miles northeast of Los Angeles in California’s Central Valley, saw a heavy law enforcement presence as the standoff continued into the afternoon. Authorities have stressed that the situation remains "extremely dangerous" and are working to resolve it safely.

As of the latest update, negotiations are ongoing and the investigation continues. Authorities have not announced any further injuries or arrests.
