Porsche Racer Doug Baron Killed in Camarillo Crash at 66

Doug Baron, a well-known Malibu resident and prominent figure within the Los Angeles classic car community, was killed on March 25 in a car accident in Camarillo, California. He was 66 years old.

According to the California Highway Patrol, Baron was driving his Porsche Coupe along Las Posas Road around 1 p.m. when a Ford Expedition crossed the center line and struck his vehicle head-on. Authorities reported that Baron died at the scene from blunt-force injuries. The other driver, who has not been named, succumbed to head trauma at a hospital, the Ventura County medical examiner confirmed.

Officials have not determined if alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Baron’s death has deeply affected both his family and the Southern California car enthusiast community. Friends and fellow drivers remember him as a skilled racer and an advocate for responsible driving. Greg Garfield, a longtime friend, highlighted Baron’s dedication to keeping aggressive driving on the racetrack and promoting safety on public roads, calling the circumstances of the accident “heartbreaking.”

Baron competed in the American Le Mans Series GTC class, participated in 24-hour endurance races at Daytona, and was a multiple winner in Porsche Owners Club events. Beyond his achievements on the track, he was known for his love of classic cars and leisure drives through local canyon roads—a passion he described as both invigorating and calming. He actively encouraged fellow drivers to respect residents and safety regulations, especially after the reopening of Mulholland Highway's 'Snake' stretch.

Friends and colleagues, including Evan Sawyer and Loren Beggs, recalled Baron’s generosity, humility, and strong spirit. Fellow Porsche racer Patrick Long described Baron as a unifying presence in the Porsche community, helping foster a sense of camaraderie among enthusiasts.

Baron is survived by his wife Laura, his daughters Meg, Sara, Izabella Jimenez, Erica Peixoto, and his son João Serra. A gathering to honor his memory is planned for car enthusiasts at Supercar Sunday at Pierce College in Woodland Hills.

The California Highway Patrol has stated that their investigation into the collision is ongoing.
