ICE Shooting in Patterson, California Sparks Dispute Over Agency Account

A 36-year-old Salvadoran man, Carlos Iván Mendoza Hernández, was shot multiple times by federal immigration agents during a targeted enforcement operation early Tuesday in Patterson, a Stanislaus County suburb in Northern California. The incident, which took place near Interstate 5 and Sperry Avenue, has ignited controversy after Hernández, through his attorney Patrick Kolasinski, challenged the official account provided by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Hernández, currently undergoing surgeries at a hospital, told his attorney that he was fired upon by ICE agents before attempting to drive away from the scene. This contradicts agency statements that Hernández “weaponized his vehicle in an attempt to run an officer over,” as posted online by acting ICE Director Todd Lyons. Kolasinski stated his client moved the vehicle backwards only after shots were fired and fled in panic, rejecting claims that vehicle movement prompted the shooting.

Video obtained by local media shows agents surrounding a black hatchback blocked between other vehicles, with the driver reversing and then attempting a U-turn before officers open fire. Aerial footage revealed multiple bullet holes in the car’s windshield. Kolasinski reported that Hernández was struck more than six times, including in the face and arm. The precise number of shots remains unclear, and the FBI is investigating the incident.

Attorney Kolasinski provided reporters with Salvadoran court documents asserting that Hernández was acquitted of any murder charges in El Salvador. He also denied allegations by ICE that his client is an 18th Street gang member and noted that a Salvadoran attorney is conducting further checks for any pending warrants.

Hernández’s fiancée, who asked that her last name not be published for safety reasons, described him as a devoted partner and father. The family has launched a fundraising campaign to help cover medical costs following the shooting.

This event is the latest in a series of recent shootings involving federal immigration officers in California, part of a trend that has led to scrutiny over agency practices and use-of-force incidents. The FBI’s investigation into the Patterson shooting is ongoing, and Hernández remains hospitalized in serious condition.
