Man Charged After Five-Hour Roof Standoff at Kwinana Service Station

A 35-year-old Parmelia man was charged after a five-hour standoff with emergency services atop a BP service station in Kwinana, Western Australia, early Thursday. The incident began shortly before 3am, when police say the man, armed with a multi-tool knife, approached the station's front window on Gilmore Avenue before climbing onto its roof.

The protracted standoff prompted a large-scale response involving Western Australia Police, the Tactical Response Group, St John Ambulance, and the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES). DFES deployed four firefighting crews from Hope Valley and Kwinana to the scene to assist with the operation.

According to police, the man refused to come down despite repeated efforts by emergency services, allegedly causing damage to both the roof of the service station and DFES equipment. Social media users posted videos showing a man in a light grey tracksuit walking across the roof as police secured the area below, drawing widespread attention from local commuters.

The standoff ended shortly before 8am when police were able to safely bring the man down from the roof. There have been no reports of injuries resulting from the incident.

The individual has since been charged with two counts of criminal damage or destruction of property, and one count each of being armed in a way that may cause fear, trespass, and obstructing public officers. He is scheduled to appear before Rockingham Magistrates Court. Authorities have not yet disclosed the motivation behind the standoff. The investigation is ongoing.
