British Woman Dies After Motorbike Crash on Vietnam's Ha Giang Loop
A 19-year-old British woman, Orla Wates, died following a motorbike accident on the Ha Giang Loop in northern Vietnam, authorities and her family confirmed on April 2.
According to local media reports, Wates was involved in an accident while traveling the Ha Giang Loop, a popular mountainous route near Vietnam's border with China known for attracting tourists. The incident occurred prior to her death at Viet Duc Friendship Hospital in Hanoi, the country's capital.
Her parents, Andrew and Henrietta Wates, paid tribute to their daughter in statements made to media outlets, describing her as "beautiful, independent and very funny, with a sharp wit." They also expressed gratitude to Dr Trịnh Van Dong and the emergency care team at Viet Duc Friendship Hospital for their support and care during their daughter's final hours.
Wates' mother confirmed that her daughter's organs had been donated in accordance with her wishes, stating, "Knowing that she is living on through them brings us great comfort." She added that the donation was their family's way of giving thanks to the medical team.
The Foreign Office stated its consular staff are supporting Wates' family and are in contact with local authorities. "Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Orla Wates, following her tragic death in Vietnam," the office said.
Consular support for the family is ongoing, and local authorities have been notified of the incident. No further details about the circumstances of the crash have been released.
