Arizona Girl Missing Since 1994 Found Alive, Sheriff Confirms
Christina Marie Plante, who disappeared from Star Valley, Arizona in 1994 at the age of 13, has been found alive, authorities in Gila County announced on Wednesday.
The Gila County Sheriff's Office reported that Plante vanished on May 19, 1994, after leaving her home on foot at around 12:30 p.m. to visit a stable where her horse was kept. She was last seen wearing shorts, a t-shirt, and tennis shoes. At the time, she was considered missing under suspicious circumstances, and extensive search efforts were carried out locally and regionally. Despite those efforts, investigators found no viable leads, and the case remained unresolved for decades.
According to a statement from Sheriff Adam J. Shepherd, the sheriff's office maintained Plante's case as open and continued to review evidence as new information emerged over the years. Eventually, a cold case unit was established within the department, focusing on unresolved disappearances. Using technological advances and modern investigative techniques, detectives in the unit developed new leads that ultimately led to locating Plante.
Sheriff Shepherd confirmed that investigators have verified Plante's identity and officially resolved her missing person status. No additional details about her location or the circumstances of her disappearance have been released, with authorities citing respect for Plante's privacy and well-being.
The Gila County Sheriff's Office emphasized the case as an example of the value of cold case reviews and evolving technology in finding long-awaited answers. The department stated it remains committed to pursuing all unresolved cases in the community.
