Explosive Device Found Outside White Plains Apartment Building; Two Questioned
A small explosive device was discovered outside the entrance to an apartment building on Odell Avenue in White Plains, New York, early Monday morning, according to local police.
Residents contacted law enforcement around 4:30 a.m. after hearing what sounded like an explosion, initially believed to be a transformer failure. White Plains police investigated the area but found nothing amiss with local electrical infrastructure. An officer then spotted the device near the apartment building’s door shortly after 6 a.m.
No injuries or property damage were reported in connection with the incident. As a precaution, local residents were advised to remain indoors while a substantial law enforcement response—including the White Plains Police Department, Westchester County police, FBI agents, and specialists from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) with a bomb-sniffing dog—secured the scene for several hours.
White Plains Public Safety Commissioner Wade Hardy stated that the device was not equipped for remote detonation. The FBI later confirmed that there was no ongoing threat to public safety, but declined to provide further details about the ongoing investigation.
Police reported questioning two people of interest in connection with the incident as of Monday afternoon. One neighbor, Yulissa Severino, said she heard two loud booms during the night and had noticed similar sounds in recent weeks. She said she observed police leading two men away in handcuffs during the morning response.
Authorities have not announced any charges. The investigation remains active as of Monday evening.
