Miguel Vargas Powers White Sox to First Win of Season in Miami With Six RBIs
The Chicago White Sox secured their first win of the season on Monday night, defeating the Miami Marlins 9-4 at loanDepot Park in Miami, Florida. The offensive breakout was fueled by Miguel Vargas, who delivered a career-high six RBIs, including a grand slam in front of his hometown supporters.
After a slow start to the season, White Sox hitters responded with a commanding performance. Everson Pereira set the tone in the third inning with a double and later scored on a Vargas single. Munetaka Murakami, who had homered in each of his first three Major League Baseball games, notched an infield single before Austin Hays hit his first home run with the club, a three-run shot.
The decisive moment came in the fourth inning, when Marlins starter Chris Paddack loaded the bases and Vargas connected for a 402-foot grand slam to left field—the White Sox's second grand slam in as many days. The Miami crowd included several family members and friends of Vargas, amplifying the significance of his achievement. "Especially to have my family here and a couple of friends that never watched me play in the big leagues, it's super-fun, and I'm very proud," Vargas said after the game.
Despite the strong offensive showing, the White Sox pitching staff faced challenges. Starter Davis Martin allowed three runs over five innings, surrendering a two-run homer to Liam Hicks and an RBI single to Jakob Marsee. The Marlins trimmed the lead further in the eighth inning, but reliever Jordan Hicks shut down a bases-loaded threat to preserve the Sox advantage.
The White Sox, who had managed only three runs over the first two games of the season, have now generated 16 runs in their last two contests. Team officials and players credited growing confidence and improved at-bats for the resurgence. The series in Miami continues as the White Sox seek to build on their offensive momentum.
