Illinois Fighting Illini Emerge as Top NCAA Tournament Contender Backed by Elite Offense and Deep Roster
The Illinois Fighting Illini enter the 2026 NCAA Tournament as one of college basketball's most compelling title contenders, finishing the regular season with the nation's top-ranked offensive efficiency rating of 131.6 according to KenPom analytics, while also placing first in offensive efficiency at TeamRankings with a mark of 1.235.
Leading the charge is freshman guard Keaton Wagler, a Kansas native who shot 41% from three-point range and 80.7% from the free-throw line during the regular season. Wagler paced the team in minutes per game (33.5), scoring (18.1 points), assists (4.30), and steals (0.90), establishing himself as one of the most versatile freshman contributors in the country. The Illini also feature a formidable frontcourt anchored by David Mirkovic and brothers Tomislav and Zvonimir Ivisic, making Illinois the tallest team in college basketball with an average height of 80 inches.
Under ninth-year head coach Brad Underwood, Illinois ranked inside the top 30 in adjusted defensive efficiency and posted a team free-throw percentage of 79.3%, trailing only an Ivy League automatic qualifier among tournament participants. The Illini absorbed seven regular-season losses, experience that figures to benefit them in high-stakes tournament play. Florida, Duke, and Arizona are projected among the other Final Four contenders, with Arkansas and Wisconsin identified as potential upset threats capable of unsettling higher seeds in early rounds.
