Tornadoes Tear Through Illinois and Indiana, Destroying Homes and Overwhelming Emergency Services

A powerful storm system tore through parts of Illinois and Indiana on Tuesday, spawning multiple tornadoes that leveled homes, toppled trees and power lines, and flooded emergency dispatch centers with calls for help. In the small northwestern Indiana community of Lake Village, Newton County Sheriff Shannon Cothran urged the public to stay away from the area as multiple homes were confirmed destroyed by what appeared to be a tornado. Indiana State Police confirmed injuries among residents, though officials were unable to immediately provide a count or update on victims' conditions. A tornado also touched down near the Kankakee County fairgrounds, approximately 57 miles south of Chicago, before tracking northeast into the community of Aroma Park, where it left extensive damage in its wake. Kankakee County authorities reported no injuries from that storm but urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel and to check on neighbors and family members. Meteorologists with the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center noted that several tornadoes formed across northeastern Illinois and northwestern Indiana, though the precise number would only be determined following official ground surveys. A forecaster described the event as a fairly typical early spring storm system of significant strength. The broader weather threat extended from the southern Plains to the southern Great Lakes, with tornado watches issued across states ranging from Oklahoma to Michigan. More than two million people across Illinois and Indiana faced a moderate risk of severe weather, while nearly 22 million others — including residents of Chicago, Fort Worth, and Oklahoma City — were under a slightly lower but still significant threat level. The storm system was forecast to continue moving eastward Wednesday, bringing the potential for additional severe weather across the mid-Atlantic and East Coast regions. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker confirmed he had been briefed on the damage and pledged state support for affected residents.
