Fatal Crash Reported Late Saturday in San Leandro

One person died and two others were injured in San Leandro late Saturday night after a vehicle crashed into a parked car following an attempted traffic stop, according to police.

Incident Occurs After Attempted Stop Near East 14th Street

Around 11:15 p.m., an officer attempted to stop a white Infiniti SUV for multiple code violations near the intersection of East 14th Street and Bancroft Avenue in San Leandro. Police stated that the driver accelerated away from the scene after the sergeant activated the patrol vehicle’s emergency lights and siren.

Patrol Sergeant Ends Ground Effort as Air Unit Monitors Vehicle

Police reported that the sergeant turned off the patrol vehicle’s emergency equipment and did not pursue the Infiniti after the driver fled. The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office air unit then followed the vehicle from the air as it continued traveling through the area.

Collision on Bancroft Avenue Near 138th Avenue

According to police, the fleeing Infiniti eventually crashed into an unoccupied parked vehicle on Bancroft Avenue near 138th Avenue in San Leandro. The impact caused the Infiniti to overturn at the scene of the collision.

One Occupant Killed, Two Hospitalized

When officers arrived, they found three men inside the overturned Infiniti. Police said the front passenger died at the scene. The driver was transported to a hospital in critical condition, and the rear passenger was also taken to a hospital for treatment. No injuries were reported from the parked vehicle, which was unoccupied at the time of the crash.

Investigation Into Suspected DUI

Officers are investigating the driver of the Infiniti for suspected driving under the influence, police said. Authorities have not released additional details about the identities of the occupants or any further outcomes of the investigation.
