Nationwide ‘ICE Out’ Protests Erupt After Fatal Minneapolis Shootings

Protests Across the United States on January 30–31, 2026

On January 30 and 31, 2026, demonstrators gathered in cities across the United States to protest actions by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and broader immigration enforcement by the federal government. The protests followed the fatal shootings of Alex Pretti and Renee Nicole Good by federal immigration agents in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Many of the demonstrations were organized under banners including “ICE Out,” “ICE Out Everywhere,” and “National Shutdown.”

On January 30, 2026, protesters marched and demonstrated in multiple locations, including Washington, D.C.; Minneapolis, Minnesota; Los Angeles, California; Gainesville, Florida; Pensacola, Florida; Cincinnati, Ohio; Bloomington, Indiana; Mishawaka, Indiana; Knoxville, Tennessee; Boston, Massachusetts; Houston, Texas; Eugene, Oregon; and Providence, Rhode Island. Additional protests took place in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, on January 31, 2026.

Triggering Events in Minneapolis

In Minneapolis, Minnesota, federal immigration agents shot and killed two Americans, Renee Good on January 7, 2026, and Alex Pretti on January 24, 2026. These deaths became a central focus of the nationwide demonstrations. During a protest on a frozen Lake BdeMaka Ska in Minneapolis on January 30, 2026, demonstrators formed an SOS signal, and protesters marched through downtown Minneapolis in response to the shootings. Participants in Minneapolis held photos of Alex Pretti and Renee Good during a “National Shutdown” protest on January 30, 2026.

According to statements by Donald Trump’s border chief on January 29, 2026, the federal government indicated that some federal agents could be withdrawn from Minneapolis. The same statements said that the Trump administration eased immigration operations in the state of Maine. These steps were described in connection with the public backlash over the shooting deaths of the two Americans in Minneapolis.

Major Demonstrations in Los Angeles and Other Cities

In Los Angeles, California, on January 30, 2026, thousands of protesters gathered at and around City Hall before marching toward federal detention facilities. Demonstrators protested against ICE and President Donald Trump’s immigration policies, including outside and near the Metropolitan Detention Center and a federal detention center in the city. During these protests, some demonstrators clashed with police and federal agents. Tactical gas was used by federal agents, and at least one protester was struck by the gas. A protester was shoved by a federal agent outside the federal detention center after approaching the line of agents. The Los Angeles Police Department deployed officers to clear protesters and used a helicopter to circle above the protest area.

Similar “National Shutdown” and “ICE Out” events occurred in other cities on January 30, 2026. In Boston, Massachusetts, people protested against ICE and Trump’s immigration policies. In Houston, Texas, protesters marched outside the CoreCivic ICE detention center. In Cincinnati, Ohio, demonstrators marched down Walnut Street and gathered in front of the Hamilton County Courthouse while police cleared traffic. In Pensacola, Florida, hundreds gathered at the corner of Palafox and Garden Streets in downtown to protest ICE.

Student Walkouts and Local Actions

Students and community members participated in several protests focused on immigration enforcement. In Mishawaka, Indiana, Penn High School students walked out of school on January 30, 2026, to protest ICE. During the walkout, a student confronted a man in a car line who shouted, “Let’s go ICE!” as students marched past. In Knoxville, Tennessee, students walked out or skipped school to join a student-led ICE Out protest in downtown on January 30, 2026.

In Bloomington, Indiana, people gathered at City Hall on January 30, 2026, to protest recent immigration enforcement actions by the government and the use of Flock cameras in the community and on the Indiana University campus. In Gainesville, Florida, protesters marched down University Avenue in an anti-ICE demonstration sponsored by the Party for Socialism & Liberation, beginning at Southwest 13th Street and ending at Bo Diddley Plaza.

Additional Regional Protests and Federal Responses

In Washington, D.C., demonstrators gathered in the Chinatown neighborhood on January 30, 2026, for a protest calling for the removal of ICE. In Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, on January 31, 2026, 12-year-old Savannah Gritter and other participants held signs along PGA Boulevard and Military Trail during an “ICE Out Everywhere” protest. In Eugene, Oregon, protesters demonstrated at the Eugene Federal Building on January 30, 2026, where a federal agent removed a makeshift shield placed over a gas canister by a protester, and federal agents drove protesters from the building’s grounds.

At the Rhode Island State House in Providence on January 30, 2026, people gathered as part of the nationwide ICE Out national strike. Across these locations, participants voiced opposition to ICE enforcement actions and to immigration policies under the Trump administration. The public reaction to the shootings in Minneapolis and subsequent protests coincided with a stated federal consideration of withdrawing some agents from Minneapolis and easing certain immigration operations in Maine.
