Sprinkles Cupcakes to Permanently Close All Locations

Sprinkles Cupcakes to Shut Down All Stores

Sprinkles Cupcakes, a bakery chain known for its storefronts and cupcake vending machines referred to as "cupcake ATMs," is permanently closing all of its locations. The founder and former owner, Candace Nelson, confirmed the closures in a post on Instagram. She stated that the shutdown of Sprinkles Cupcakes locations would begin immediately.

Founder Confirms Rumors of Closure

Candace Nelson used her Instagram account to address existing rumors about the status of the bakery chain. In her post, she confirmed that the rumors of Sprinkles Cupcakes permanently closing were accurate. Nelson said she had not anticipated this outcome after selling the company to a private equity group in 2014. She stated that she believed Sprinkles Cupcakes would continue to grow and remain in operation indefinitely.

Origins and Expansion of the Bakery Chain

Nelson founded Sprinkles Cupcakes in 2005, opening the first location in Beverly Hills, California. Following its launch, the company grew to include several stores in multiple states across the United States. Within California, Sprinkles Cupcakes opened at least nine locations. In addition to its storefront bakeries, the company installed 10 cupcake ATM vending machines.

First Out-of-State Location in Dallas

As part of its expansion beyond California, Sprinkles Cupcakes opened its first store outside the state in 2007. That location was established in Dallas, Texas. This step marked the beginning of the chain’s presence in other parts of the country.

Ownership and Current Response

Candace Nelson sold Sprinkles Cupcakes to a private equity group in 2014. She is now the former owner of the company. As of Wednesday afternoon, the current ownership of Sprinkles Cupcakes had not issued any public comment regarding the decision to close all locations. No additional reasons for the closures were stated in the information provided by Nelson, beyond her confirmation that the permanent shutdown of the bakery chain’s locations would commence immediately.
