Nurse Fatally Injured in Sacramento VA Medical Center Parking Lot

A nurse died after being struck by a vehicle in the parking lot of the Sacramento VA Medical Center in Rancho Cordova, California, on December 13, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office.

Sgt. Amar Gandhi, speaking on behalf of Rancho Cordova police, said the collision occurred when a driver was pulling into a parking lot near the entrance to the medical center’s emergency room and struck a pedestrian. The impact caused the woman to fall and hit her head on the pavement.

Victim Identified as Nurse Novyrose Mejia

UC Davis Health identified the woman who was struck as Novyrose Mejia, a nurse within the UC Davis Health network. A GoFundMe organized in connection with the incident stated that Mejia worked as a nurse for both the Sacramento VA Medical Center and UC Davis Health.

After the collision, Mejia was initially taken into the Sacramento VA Medical Center’s emergency room. Due to the severity of her injuries, she was later transferred to UC Davis Medical Center, according to Gandhi. She subsequently died as a result of the injuries sustained in the incident.

Statements and Confirmed Outcomes

UC Davis Health issued a statement acknowledging the death of Novyrose Mejia and noted that she was part of its nursing staff. The organization publicly expressed its grief over her loss.

The Department of Veterans Affairs also released a statement offering condolences to Mejia’s family and to those who worked with her at the Sacramento VA Medical Center.

The GoFundMe created for Mejia’s family reported that she is survived by her husband and two sons. The fundraiser was described as being organized to support her family following her death.
