Denver Sheriff’s Deputies Charged in Alleged Assault on At-Risk Adult

Married Denver Deputies Arrested in Alleged Assault Case

Two Denver sheriff’s deputies, Jason Gentempo, 44, and Carla Gentempo, 43, were arrested last week in Denver, Colorado, and charged with third-degree assault of an at-risk adult, a class 6 felony. The charge stems from an alleged assault on a paraplegic man in a wheelchair that occurred on October 17.

Details of the Alleged October 17 Incident

According to an arrest report, the alleged victim, whose name is redacted, told investigators that he was outside his apartment building with his dog when one of the suspects told him to put the dog inside. The report states that the man later identified Jason and Carla Gentempo from a photo lineup.

The arrest report, which is heavily redacted, indicates that the man said Carla Gentempo punched him in the face with a closed fist and kicked him in the chest. He reported that this caused him to fall backward out of his wheelchair and hit his head on the pavement. The report further states that security camera footage shows Jason Gentempo striking the man while he was falling in his chair. An investigator wrote that the alleged victim then fell out of the camera’s frame.

The arrest report also states that Jason Gentempo is seen kicking and then stomping on the man’s phone. It further notes that the two suspects then ran to a white truck they had left running nearby and drove away.

Arrest, Detention, and Court Proceedings

Following the investigation, Jason and Carla Gentempo were arrested and booked into the Downtown Denver Detention Center. They were later released on a personal recognizance bond.

Court records list no attorney for Jason Gentempo, although a voicemail was left on a number associated with him in public records. A voicemail was also left for Carla Gentempo’s attorney seeking comment on the case.

Employment Status and Potential Consequences

According to the Denver Sheriff Department, Jason Gentempo became a deputy in 2005 and is assigned to the Downtown Denver Detention Center. Carla Gentempo became a deputy in 2010 and is currently a sergeant assigned to the Denver Sheriff Department’s Administration Division. The department states that both deputies are currently on investigatory leave.

Both Jason and Carla Gentempo are due back in court on December 29. The department indicates that, if they are convicted of the felony charge, they would lose their ability to serve as law enforcement officers in Colorado.
