Man Shot by Police During Arcadia Terrace Investigation
On Tuesday night, Chicago police shot and killed a man during an investigation involving a stolen car in the Arcadia Terrace neighborhood on the city’s North Side. The incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. in the 5700 block of North Washtenaw Avenue.
Police Investigate Stolen Parked Vehicle
According to the Chicago Police Department, tactical officers were investigating a stolen, unoccupied parked vehicle at the location. While officers were on the scene, a dark sedan arrived with two men and a woman inside.
Confrontation at the Scene
Police stated that the two men exited the sedan and attempted to get into the stolen vehicle. Officers then approached the group. One man ran from the scene, while the other man returned to the driver’s seat of the sedan. Police said the man in the driver’s seat refused to get out of the vehicle when ordered by officers.
Shooting and Collision
According to police, the driver then accelerated the sedan, dragging an officer. The officer fired one shot, striking the driver in the head. After the shot was fired, the sedan crashed into a parked vehicle.
Medical Response and Fatal Outcome
The injured driver was transported to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center. Police said he was pronounced dead at the hospital. As of Wednesday afternoon, authorities had not released his identity.
Arrest, Search, and Evidence Recovered
Police reported that the woman who remained inside the sedan was taken into custody at the scene. The man who ran away had not been located by police as of the latest update. Officers stated that two firearms were recovered at the scene of the incident.
Officer Injuries and Administrative Action
Police said the officer who was dragged by the vehicle was transported to a hospital with minor injuries and is expected to be OK. The Chicago Police Department reported that the officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative duty for at least 30 days.
