A U.S. Marine died Wednesday during a training exercise at Camp Pendleton in Southern California, according to military officials from I Marine Expeditionary Force.

The Marine, identified as Private First Class Tanner F. Rubio, 21, sustained fatal injuries in what officials described as a "tactical vehicle mishap" that occurred in the afternoon. The incident took place on the base during a training event.

Maj. Gen. Thomas Savage, commanding general of the 1st Marine Division, issued a statement acknowledging Rubio’s death and describing the loss as one felt across the division. He stated that Rubio’s service to his country would not be forgotten and said personnel within the division would keep Rubio and his family in their thoughts.
