Florida Fugitive Gary Wayne Howard Arrested in Indiana

Arrest of Long-Time Fugitive in Indiana

A sex offender previously convicted in Florida was arrested in Indiana this week after spending 16 years evading law enforcement. Authorities identified the individual as 76-year-old Gary Wayne Howard, who disappeared in 2010 after escaping Florida State Probation. U.S. Marshals located and detained Howard in Indianapolis following a renewed investigation.

Officials said the arrest occurred earlier this week, after investigators confirmed his identity on surveillance footage. Howard was taken into custody when he walked onto a front porch at the residence where he had been staying.

Details of Prior Conviction and Disappearance

Howard was previously convicted of 22 counts of possession of child pornography in Florida and was required to register as a sex offender for life. After his disappearance in 2010, he had no further contact with law enforcement until his arrest in Indiana.

Investigators recently located an Enterprise rental vehicle connected to Howard near Mauzy Lake in Kentucky. Authorities said the discovery appeared to be an intentional attempt to fake his own death and stage a suicide. This finding prompted renewed efforts to track him down across multiple states.

Investigative Breakthrough in Indianapolis

Officials learned that Howard had numerous relatives in the Indianapolis area who could assist him in avoiding detection. Surveillance operations and interviews revealed he was living in Indy’s historic Irvington neighborhood. After confirming his presence, law enforcement moved in and arrested him.

According to officials, Howard reportedly said, “I had hoped to be dead before you caught up with me,” during the arrest.

Custody Status and Pending Charges

Howard was booked into the Vanderburgh County Jail around 11 a.m. Wednesday. Authorities did not clarify why he was being held there instead of Marion County. His charges were listed as “other agencies’ charges,” and no bond had been set as of Friday afternoon.

Officials reported that Howard will be extradited to Florida. He is expected to face possible imprisonment for violating probation and for 32 charges related to failure to register as a sex offender. Additionally, he will face an Adam Walsh prosecution case in Indiana.
