The victim, identified as Kay Smith, had been declared brain dead shortly after the incident on September 10, 2025. She was taken off life support on Sunday, and her death was confirmed by medical authorities.

Timeline of the Incident

The shooting took place at approximately 3:30 a.m. on September 10 when Officer Adam Reinhart was conducting a curfew check at Zilker Park. During the patrol, Reinhart discovered a stolen vehicle at the location. As he investigated, events escalated quickly.

According to body camera footage released by the police, Brandon Thompson, 30, who was identified as Smith’s boyfriend, shot her in the head at close range. Immediately afterward, Thompson turned the gun on Officer Reinhart, striking him in the abdomen.

Kay Smith never regained consciousness after the shooting and was declared brain dead soon after. She remained on life support for several days before being taken off it.

Officer Reinhart survived the gunshot wound to the abdomen. Medical officials have reported that he is recovering and is expected to survive.

Following the attack, Thompson fled the park on foot. Later, he attempted to break into a nearby residence. At that point, a homeowner shot him in the arm and leg, preventing his escape. He was arrested shortly after and is also expected to recover from his injuries.

Criminal Charges Against Brandon Thompson

Authorities have charged Brandon Thompson with attempted capital murder of a police officer and burglary of a residence. Police Chief Lisa Davis stated that Thompson may also face additional charges connected to the death of Kay Smith.

Thompson is currently in custody, and further legal proceedings will determine whether he will face more serious charges as the investigation develops.

The Austin Police Department officially confirmed Kay Smith’s death on Tuesday. Officials have said that more details regarding the ongoing investigation will be released at a later date.

Both Officer Adam Reinhart and Brandon Thompson are expected to recover physically. However, the incident has left the community mourning the loss of Kay Smith, whose death is now central to the criminal proceedings against Thompson.
