Vartabedian Hester and Haynes Strengthens Bankruptcy Practice in Dallas with Addition of Veteran Attorneys

Expansion of the Dallas Office

The Dallas office of Vartabedian Hester & Haynes LLP is welcoming two highly respected bankruptcy attorneys, Martin Sosland and Candice Carson, as part of its expanding Corporate Restructuring and Finance Practice. Their arrival enhances the firm’s depth of experience in handling some of the most complex restructuring matters in the country.

Career Highlights of Martin Sosland

With a career spanning more than four decades, Martin Sosland has established himself as one of the leading names in bankruptcy law. He has served as lead or co-lead counsel in several landmark Chapter 11 bankruptcies and reorganizations, including high-profile cases such as Enron, Pilgrim’s Pride, SemGroup, Crescent Resources, Texas Rangers Baseball Partners, Dallas Stars, and Zale Corporation.

Most recently, he represented a monoline insurer with more than $1 billion of exposure in the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico bankruptcy, the largest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history.

Mr. Sosland has also represented secured and unsecured creditors, boards of directors, and buyers of distressed companies in both Chapter 11 proceedings and out-of-court restructurings. His work spans industries such as technology, real estate, retail, oil and gas, and insurance.

Recognized as a Fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy, he currently serves as Chair of its History Committee. His professional distinctions include consistent rankings in Chambers USA since 2014 and listings in The Best Lawyers in America since 2006, where he earned recognition as Lawyer of the Year in Bankruptcy and Creditor Debtor Rights/Insolvency and Reorganization Law for Dallas/Fort Worth in both 2020 and 2025.

The Career Path of Candice Carson

Candice Carson, who joins the firm as Counsel, brings 15 years of experience in financial restructuring and contingency planning across diverse industries, including automotive, airline, oil and gas, retail, and senior living.

Her career began at Weil, Gotshal & Manges and continued at Butler Snow, where she gained significant expertise in counseling companies facing financial challenges. Recently, she co-led the acquisition of The Stayton at Museum Way by Buckner Retirement Services, working alongside Mr. Sosland.

Ms. Carson earned her law degree from Harvard Law School and graduated with honors from the University of Florida. She is known for working closely with clients to develop tailored strategies that align with their business needs and restructuring goals.

Statements from Leadership

Practice co-leader Jeff Prostok highlighted the impact of the new arrivals, noting that Sosland’s reputation and Carson’s expertise bring unmatched strength to the team. “Marty is a legend in the practice of bankruptcy law,” said Prostok. “For businesses seeking the highest level of restructuring expertise with the personalized service of a litigation boutique, our firm is positioned as one of the strongest corporate restructuring and finance practices in Texas.”

Managing partner Conrad Hester emphasized that the firm’s talent roster continues to expand. “We are pleased to have Marty and Candice join us as we grow,” Hester stated. “Their arrival builds on the impressive team we formed earlier this year, ensuring we can continue delivering exceptional service today while preparing for the future.”

Professional Journey of Martin Sosland

Mr. Sosland, an honors graduate of the University of Texas School of Law, began his career at Akin Gump before joining Weil in 1987 to help open its Dallas office. He remained at Weil for 28 years before moving to Butler Snow in 2016. Over his career, he has worked on both sides of the table, representing clients such as the Texas Rangers and Mrs. Baird’s, as well as opposing them in other matters.

Reflecting on his move, Sosland expressed enthusiasm about joining the firm. “Candice and I are excited to be part of such a talented team,” he said. “Having known Jeff and Bobby for years, I look forward to working with them full time and helping the firm continue its remarkable success.”
