A routine flight from Colorado to Texas turned into a terrifying ordeal when a SkyWest aircraft suddenly dropped more than 4,000 feet within seconds. The incident occurred about 90 minutes into the journey from Aspen to Houston, leaving passengers shaken and sending two to the hospital.

The flight was cruising at 39,000 feet when it abruptly descended to 34,650 feet while flying near Fort Worth, Texas. Severe weather in the region is believed to have triggered the sudden turbulence, which forced the plane to divert from its original route.

Emergency Landing in Austin

With passengers injured and chaos inside the cabin, the aircraft was rerouted to Austin, approximately 165 miles short of its intended destination. Data shows the plane descended over 25,000 feet in just six minutes before safely landing at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.

Turbulence Throws Passengers Across the Cabin

The violent jolt inside the cabin caused panic as belongings flew into the air. Witnesses reported seeing oxygen masks drop while purses and personal items scattered across the aisles. Some passengers were thrown from their seats, with one describing how a man was tossed upward “like a rag doll.” Others recalled phones and objects landing in their laps as the turbulence raged.

Medical Response and Passenger Safety

Emergency teams rushed to the aircraft upon landing. All 39 passengers and four crew members were evaluated for potential injuries. Two individuals were transported to the hospital for further care, though their injuries were not considered life-threatening.
