A man was taken into custody after four children were rescued from a hot vehicle and transported to a hospital.

At approximately 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Phoenix police responded to reports of multiple children left inside a car in the area of 24th and Madison Streets.

Upon arrival, officers found a vehicle with four children inside, all under the age of 10.

According to police, the car was not running and all the windows were closed.

Officers gained access to the vehicle and removed all four children. The children were given water and placed in a police cruiser with air conditioning to help cool them down.

Phoenix Fire personnel were dispatched to the scene to provide medical attention to the children.

Police released body-camera footage showing the officers rescuing the children from the vehicle near Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport on Thursday.

The video, released on Friday, shows officers approaching a business parking lot near 24th Street and Madison Street, south of Washington Street. The children were inside a non-running vehicle with windows rolled up around 3:30 p.m.

The footage shows three children in the back seat, including one in a child seat, and another child in the front passenger seat. Officers opened the doors to reach the children. One officer asked, “Where’s mom or dad?” Another asked, “Do you know where your guys’ family is?” One child responded, “Nope.”

All four children were given water and moved into a police SUV with the air conditioning running. A female officer asked, “Water feel good?”

The recorded high temperature in Phoenix on Thursday was 106 degrees. Police stated the temperature inside the vehicle reached 125 degrees, with each child’s body temperature nearing 100 degrees.

The four children were transported to a hospital for evaluation. All are expected to recover.

Police believe the children were inside the vehicle for nearly an hour.

Authorities located the children’s father, 38-year-old Ascencio Largo, inside a nearby business. He was arrested and booked into jail on child abuse charges. His bond was set at $5,000.
