Fort Worth Man on Parole Arrested for Fatal Assault of Woman in Public Street

A Fort Worth man has been arrested and charged with murder following the brutal beating of a woman in a public street, leaving family members devastated and searching for answers.

Steven Black, 47, is accused of violently attacking 50-year-old Susan Watkins near the 900 block of South Jennings Avenue last Wednesday. Authorities say Watkins suffered severe injuries during the assault and succumbed to them over the weekend.

“She was still the light of my life… someone I loved dearly,” said her daughter, Briana Watkins, reflecting on her mother’s spirit despite the difficulties she faced in recent years. Originally from Mineral Wells, Watkins had been experiencing homelessness but was remembered by her family as compassionate and selfless.

“She just cared about others more than anyone I’ve ever seen,” her daughter added.

Family members remain unsure of any connection between Watkins and the suspect. The attack took place behind a dumpster, and police have not confirmed whether the two knew each other.

According to investigators, Watkins was found lying on the ground with critical injuries. Witnesses told police that Black was seen stomping on her head and body, and may have used a rock—later found at the scene—as part of the assault.

Police apprehended Black near the location of the attack. He was allegedly covered in blood and attempted to flee. Authorities noted that Black was out on parole at the time of the incident for a prior offense.

“What we don’t understand is why he was out on the streets,” said Briana Watkins, expressing frustration over the circumstances that led to her mother’s death.

Susan’s mother, Dorothy Grimes, recalled her daughter’s past as a former Army reservist and someone who stood up for others. “She wouldn’t let bullies bully other kids,” Grimes said.

Law enforcement has not released a motive for the assault. A toxicology report indicated the presence of drugs in Watkins’ system, though her family is unsure whether that played any role in the attack.

Loved ones hope that surveillance footage from nearby businesses might help clarify what happened in the moments leading up to the fatal encounter.
