Phoenix Homeowner Fatally Shoots Intruder During Attempted Break-In With Children Inside

A 25-year-old man was fatally shot on Sunday morning after allegedly attempting to break into a home in central Phoenix, where a resident was inside with his young children.

The incident occurred near the intersection of 7th and Glendale avenues, prompting a swift response from Phoenix police following a 911 call made by the homeowner at approximately 7:45 a.m.

According to investigators, the homeowner reported that an individual was in his backyard attempting to force entry into the house. While still on the phone with emergency services, the homeowner discharged his firearm, striking the intruder.

The suspect, later identified as Kwame Hightower, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police confirmed that no other injuries were reported and the children inside the home were unharmed.

The man who fired the shot was briefly detained for questioning but has since been released pending the outcome of a full investigation. Authorities say the case has been forwarded to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office for further review and a decision on whether charges will be filed.

As of now, the investigation remains active, with detectives continuing to gather witness statements and review any available security footage.
