Man Armed with Machete Shot by Police After Pursuit in Downtown Los Angeles
A dramatic confrontation unfolded in downtown Los Angeles on the morning of July 13, 2025, when a man wielding a machete was shot by police following a brief vehicle pursuit and a violent encounter. The incident led to major street closures and a full-scale investigation by local authorities.
At approximately 9:14 a.m., officers were dispatched to Figueroa Street and Olympic Boulevard after receiving multiple reports of a man standing in the roadway, waving a machete and chanting loudly. Upon arrival, officers encountered the armed individual, who advanced aggressively toward them before retreating into the driver’s seat of a black Dodge Challenger.
The suspect then sped southbound on Figueroa Street, initiating a police chase through the downtown area. The pursuit concluded just south of 12th Street, where the vehicle came to a stop and the confrontation intensified.
Still holding the machete, the man exited the vehicle and charged at the officers, prompting one officer to open fire. The suspect was struck by gunfire during the encounter.
Officers immediately rendered medical assistance at the scene, and the suspect was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery. His current condition remains undisclosed.
Authorities recovered the machete at the scene, which has since been booked into evidence as part of the ongoing investigation.
Due to the nature of the police-involved shooting, Figueroa Street was closed between Olympic and Pico boulevards, causing significant traffic disruption throughout the morning.
This incident highlights the dangers police face when responding to unpredictable and volatile situations involving armed individuals in densely populated urban areas.
