Suspected Gunman in Boom Island Mass Shooting Captured in Chicago as Murder Charges Mount

Authorities have arrested 23-year-old Marquez Hill-Turnipseed, the man believed to have fired the deadly rounds during a chaotic mass shooting at Boom Island Park in Minneapolis on June 1. The violent outburst left six people shot, including Stageina Katraya Shapryia Whiting, a 23-year-old mother who was killed in the crossfire.

Hill-Turnipseed was taken into custody in Chicago after weeks of investigation and is now facing multiple counts of murder and attempted murder, according to criminal complaints filed in Hennepin County. Law enforcement officials say the suspect opened fire from the passenger seat of a Dodge Challenger, unleashing bullets into a crowd of parkgoers during what they believe was a gang-related confrontation.

Whiting, who police confirmed had no involvement in the altercation, was struck by gunfire and later died from her injuries. She is described as an innocent bystander tragically caught in the line of fire.

The shooting occurred during a birthday party gathering that had initially started at French Park in Plymouth. The group later relocated to Boom Island after being asked to leave the original location. It was during this event that tensions escalated between rival gang factions—identified in the complaint as members of the Lows and Highs gangs—resulting in over 130 rounds being fired in a matter of minutes.

Authorities say Hill-Turnipseed was recently released from federal prison in March, having served time for illegal possession of a firearm modified with a Glock switch, a device that converts semi-automatic pistols into fully automatic weapons. His name also appeared in a previous federal gang crackdown linked to a series of shootings in the Twin Cities. Records from a 2021 criminal complaint indicate he had been involved in multiple prior incidents, including a high-speed chase in Eden Prairie.

Following his arrest, Hill-Turnipseed reportedly admitted to opening fire, telling investigators he was targeting rival gang members after one of his friends had been shot just moments before.

In a related development, 23-year-old Zyere Jakye Porter has also been charged with aiding and abetting both murder and attempted murder. Authorities say the Dodge Challenger used in the shooting was later found at Porter’s residence in Spring Lake Park. His arrest came nearly two weeks before Hill-Turnipseed’s capture.

Among the six victims of the shooting, one person was reportedly left paralyzed as a result of their injuries. Officials have not released further details about the conditions of the other survivors.

The mass shooting has sparked renewed concerns about gang violence and illegal firearms across the city. Investigators continue to piece together evidence and are urging anyone with additional information to come forward.
