Man Killed and Child Injured in Broad Daylight Shooting on Chicago’s South Side
A tragic shooting on Chicago’s South Side left one man dead, two others wounded, and a 6-year-old boy injured by shattered glass in a violent incident that unfolded Saturday afternoon in the Woodlawn neighborhood.
The chaos began just before 4 p.m. inside a business located in the 800 block of East 63rd Street, where a group of people were gathered when two armed individuals entered and opened fire. Witnesses described a sudden and terrifying scene as gunshots rang out, sending customers and employees scrambling for cover.
A 31-year-old man was struck multiple times and was rushed to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead. His identity has not yet been released, and officials are working to notify his family.
Another victim, a 25-year-old man, sustained a gunshot wound to the leg and was taken to the same hospital, where he is reported to be in good condition. A third male, whose age has not been confirmed, suffered a graze wound and made his own way to the hospital for treatment.
Amid the gunfire, a 6-year-old boy was also hurt—not by a bullet, but by broken glass caused by the shooting. The child was transported to Comer Children’s Hospital and is also in good condition, though shaken by the traumatic event.
As of Saturday evening, no suspects were in custody, and the investigation remains active. Area 1 detectives are reviewing surveillance footage and gathering witness statements in an effort to identify and apprehend those responsible. The motive behind the shooting has not been disclosed, but authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.
This latest act of gun violence has once again brought grief and fear to a community already burdened by similar tragedies. Residents and local leaders continue to call for increased safety measures and community investment to curb the ongoing cycle of violence in neighborhoods like Woodlawn, where even young children are no longer shielded from its impact.
