Tragedy on the 405 Claims Two Lives Including a Respected LAPD Veteran

A devastating multi-vehicle crash on the southbound 405 Freeway in Brentwood, California claimed the lives of two people early Monday morning, including Los Angeles Police Department Sergeant Shiou Deng, a decorated officer with over two decades of service. The fatal incident brought traffic to a halt for several hours before all lanes reopened around 12:18 p.m. at Moraga Drive, according to authorities.

A Heroic Final Act on a California Freeway

The crash occurred around 1:58 a.m., when Sergeant Deng, driving along the freeway, noticed a collision up ahead. Without hesitation, he activated his rear amber lights, a move designed to warn oncoming drivers and protect the individuals involved in the initial crash. As he approached the accident site to assist, he was struck by another vehicle, suffering fatal injuries.

One other person was also pronounced dead at the scene, and two others, including Sgt. Deng, were transported to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. The condition of the second hospitalized individual has not yet been released.

Remembering a Leader and a Lifelong Public Servant

At a news briefing outside the hospital, LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell confirmed the sergeant’s death, describing it as a tragic loss not just for the department, but for the entire city.

“It’s with a heavy heart that I share some news that’s tragic for the police family and for the residents of Los Angeles and really the nation,” McDonnell said.

Sergeant Shiou Deng served 26 years with the LAPD, including 17 years in the Mental Evaluation Unit, where he was known for his empathy, professionalism, and deep commitment to community well-being. He was promoted to sergeant just two years ago and was serving with the West LA Division at the time of his death.

Honoring a Legacy of Service and Sacrifice

As news of the incident spread, tributes began pouring in from public officials, officers, and community members. Mayor Karen Bass ordered American flags above all city buildings to be flown at half-staff in Deng’s honor.

“This is a sad day for our city,” Mayor Bass said. “The men and women of LAPD put their lives on the line for Angelenos each and every day.”

California Governor Gavin Newsom also expressed condolences, directing flags at the State Capitol to be flown at half-staff.

“Jennifer and I are heartbroken by the loss of Sergeant Deng,” Newsom stated. “We join his family, friends, and fellow officers in mourning and in honoring his memory. May his service never be forgotten.”

A Growing Memorial and Reflections from Colleagues

By Monday afternoon, a memorial began forming outside the West LA LAPD station, where colleagues placed blue and white roses next to a framed photo of Sgt. Deng. The atmosphere was heavy with emotion as fellow officers gathered to honor their friend and colleague.

Detective Victor Lopez, who trained with Deng in the police academy back in 1999, shared personal memories during the memorial:

“He brought light to a lot of situations in the academy and throughout his career. He did the best he could, the entire time he was in the department. He embodies all the core values we stand for.”

Lopez also remembered Deng as a dedicated family man, often speaking about caring for his aging parents.

“He talked about healthcare for his parents. He was very dedicated to them,” Lopez added. “Definitely not going to be the same without him.”

An Officer Who Put Others First Until the End

Chief McDonnell emphasized that Sgt. Deng’s final act — activating his amber lights and slowing traffic to protect others — epitomized his character.

“He put himself in harm’s way to alert others of the danger ahead. He’s someone we’ll all look to as an inspiration as we carry on our mission.”

Deng’s dedication to public safety, both on and off duty, and his nearly three-decade career of service make his loss all the more profound. As funeral arrangements are being finalized, the city of Los Angeles continues to mourn the passing of one of its most devoted guardians.
