In a heartbreaking incident near one of India’s most sacred shrines, seven people lost their lives in a helicopter crash while returning from the Kedarnath Dham to Guptkashi in the early hours of the morning. The crash, which occurred around 5:20 AM, involved a helicopter operated by Aryan Aviation and resulted in the deaths of six pilgrims, including a child, and the pilot.

The ill-fated journey, which was supposed to last just 10 minutes, ended in tragedy as the helicopter went down in a forested region between Gaurikund and Sonprayag, both situated in Rudraprayag district, Uttarakhand, India.

All seven individuals onboard perished in the crash. The passengers hailed from different parts of the country, including Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Gujarat, reflecting the pan-Indian nature of Kedarnath pilgrimages.

According to officials from the Uttarakhand Civil Aviation Development Authority (UCADA), the helicopter was on a return trip after completing a spiritual visit to the Himalayan shrine when the tragedy struck.

Earlier on June 7, another helicopter en route to Kedarnath developed a technical snag shortly after take-off and was forced to emergency land on a highway. In that case, five pilgrims escaped unhurt while the pilot suffered minor injuries.

These recurring accidents have raised concerns over air safety in the fragile Himalayan corridor, where sudden weather shifts, narrow valleys, and crowded flight schedules during the pilgrimage season create challenging flying conditions.
